My kids have attended the same school since pre-K, and something finally changed TODAY. Backstory: When my oldest was in kindergarten, I got sick and lost my vision. He's now in fifth grade. I recall going to his classroom for parties and overhearing the teacher teaching sign language. However, there was never any mention of blindness or visual impairment. I decided to engage with the school community once my boys started getting made fun of for having a blind mom. I assured them that despite my visual impairment, I will do anything I have to do to show the kids in my community that I’m just like anyone else. I just do things differently, which is okay. Is it hard? Absolutely. But we can do hard things! Today was significant because the Kansas State School for the Blind came and educated the children about blindness and visual impairment. They set up stations at the elementary school for the kids and I had so much enjoyment at my station. It's hard to express without getting emotional. This means a lot to me, but mostly to my boys. Today, I felt heard, seen, proud, and confident that these kids listened and learned. I felt included. (Just saying that brings tears to my eyes!) #VisuallyImpaired #Blind #KansasSchoolForTheBlind #youcandohardthings #inclusiveness #AccessibilityMatters #Thankful ... See MoreSee Less

We are very grateful for our food pantry team and all of the help the students (& Tim) do for our food programs. 🍎 🥬 📚 Tim Schierbeck works with the students from Kansas City School of the Blind. He spends quality time with the students developing their necessary skills to acquire employment and become independent. - The students help keep the pantry stocked and assist patrons when needed.- They plant plants in the greenhouse and help keep the garden clean. Tim is such a positive influence and role model to the students, he is always showing them their true potential and helping them achieve greatness. ... See MoreSee Less
